line tunnel

Day one hundred and eighty-nine: Nothing fancy to complicated today. This simply painting was inspired by a fleeting view of a tunnel in an episode from the new Sherlock Holmes series that I was watching after dinner, desperately hoping to be inspired to draw rather than fall asleep. It’s been a long, wonderful, busy week of learning in the new job. Oh, and at the last moment, I decided to use today’s sketch as an opportunity to test some advice from Kurt H., who recommended drawing straight lines with my whole arm, and not just my fingers. While this still takes practice, I have to agree that they are easier to produce (and straighter than usual) when done this way. I’d also add that moving the arm steadily, smoothly, and not to slowly, helps too!

black and white abstract

Day one hundred and eighty-eight: Anyone who follows these daily sketches may have noticed that when I really don’t know what to draw, I end up doodling something very abstract. Tonight I played vertical lines using black and white pencils to create shapes. It’s something I’ve toyed with before, and sometime when I have a real subject in mind, I might try using this drawing style and see what happens. While I was making this senseless sketch, it seemed like nothing more than a gathering of light and dark lines, but now that I look at it here, it appears almost human-like.

red handed picasso thief

Day one hundred and eighty-seven: This morning I read that a man carried a small Picasso drawing out of a San Francisco art gallery and into a waiting taxicab. He didn’t pay for it. Today’s sketch is in honor of the hope that the brazen thief is caught red handed!

forgottenus 1

Day one hundred and eighty-six: When I decided to make a sketch based on the style of a drawing I briefly saw at work today, I forgot that straight lines are not my strength. I even tried changing the diagonal angle to the opposite side to see if being left handed might have had something to do with it. That only helped a little. Coincidentally, I also forgot the name of the Russian constructivist artist who made the original drawing. It might have been Kasimir Malevich, and I believe the title was Supremus 18, or something like that. In any case, I’m calling my version Forgottenus 1.

mixed fruit pie

Day one hundred and eighty-five: This morning I found that the remaining cherries I bought at the market a couple days ago were very ripe and needed to be eaten. I immediately thought about making a pie. There wasn’t enough fruit for a full one, so I added some nectarine, blueberries, and strawberries, which is why the pie filling has so many colors. Pastry baking is something that comes pretty naturally to me, and it was easier for me to make the lattice-top crust than to paint it. My reward for sketching the pie was the chance to try a piece, which I’m eating even as I write this. A delicious way to celebrate the 4th of July.

trumpeter to go

Day one hundred and eighty-four: Tired after another full day of unpacking and putting things away, I barely wanted to make a sketch. Even this cartoonish pencil scrap is my third attempt at quickly representing the most intriguing thing I saw on the street today: a trumpet player scooting along the bike lane on roller blades! Tomorrow, back to the digital drawing pad, I think. I’ve had enough iPhone sketching for awhile!

cherries

Day one hundred and eighty-three: Today marks the midway point of what my fellow daily sketcher, Sara W., has called a “possibly doomed” 365-day challenge to make a drawing a day for a year. Some days I’m inclined to agree. This evening I had no idea what to sketch, and stared at a blank white screen for several minutes. Then I remembered discovering the Rittenhouse Square Saturday market and the quart of fresh picked cherries I bought and brought home to rinse in a shiny new colander. They are delicious!

new place

Day one hundred and eighty-two: This simple pencil drawing of the decorative mantle in my new apartment was made from memory in two short sessions. I started sketching in a restaurant while waiting for my dinner, but my food came, and I set the iPhone aside. Back in the new place I noticed a few details that had previously escaped me. These fresh recollections were added while sitting in the dark, snuggling Caprica, who doesn’t yet know what to think. Since he’s been a key part of the moving theme the last few days, I included him here on the mantle. Welcome home, little buddy!

philadelphia or bust!

Day one hundred and eighty-one: My mom commented that yesterday’s sketched with Caprica riding in a car looked like a children’s book illustration. Today I decided to continue the theme and draw the UHAUL trailer. To work in my green-cheeked conure, changed the festive picture and the name of the city on the side. I like this version much better!

conure road trip

Day one hundred and eighty: 15 hours on the road with plenty of time to think about what today’s sketch might be. I originally thought I would draw the UHAUL trailer, but later decided to honor Caprica’s first road trip instead. On a whim, I made the tiny bird oversized and leaning out the window.
