This sketch is the one hundred and ninth in a 365-day challenge to draw a picture a day, every day, for a year…

Day one hundred and nine: Ooo, I can’t even begin to express in words how annoyed I am with my computer. Works one day, won’t the next. Corrupt files? Corrupt applications? Restart, reinstall, update. Still broken. Grrr.

Just had to get that out. A sketch is a nicer way to do it!

This sketch is the one hundred and eighth in a 365-day challenge to draw a picture a day, every day, for a year…

Day one hundred and eight: This evening I attended the final session of my math prep for the GRE course. At one point, as the instructor was working through a problem, it occurred to me that formulas are like vocabulary. Add to that geometry and suddenly the formulas have a visual form. Do you speak shape?

This sketch is the one hundred and seventh in a 365-day challenge to draw a picture a day, every day, for a year…

Day one hundred and seven: Today I looked at some amazing prints by early 20th-century German Expressionist artists who were working in etching, aquatint, and drypoint. My favorite was by Emil Nolde. I’m particularly fond of the way he works the plate so there are layers upon layers of form. This drawing was inspired by that idea, and spontaneously made from my own imagination.

This sketch is the one hundred and sixth in a 365-day challenge to draw a picture a day, every day, for a year…

Day one hundred and six: This sketch was inspired by a painting titled
“On the Nile” by the nineteenth-century American painter, Sanford Robinson Gifford. The painting appeared in a presentation at the conference today. My digital drawing pad would have better captured the subtle luminosity of the sky and water, but I mostly wanted to explore the reflection of the sail in the water, and the iPhone worked fine for a quick study of that. In the original painting, the sail and its reflection create an almost abstract vertical arc in a scene that is otherwise naturalistic. Very lovely.

message in a bottle

This sketch is the one hundred and fifth in a 365-day challenge to draw a picture a day, every day, for a year…

Day one hundred and fifth: Waiting for my takeout food, I sketched this little scene: a freshly scribbled message in a bottle, waiting to be sent. I’ve been having fun with DoodleBuddy the last few days. It’s an easy way to make really fast sketches of a simple idea, but I’m looking forward to drawing with the wacom bamboo again soon. 105th sketch of the day done? Check!

This sketch is the one hundred and fourth in a 365-day challenge to draw a picture a day, every day, for a year…

Day one hundred and four: Just the other day I was disparaging artists like Picasso, who made lithographic doodles for the art market. Now I find myself in a pinch for time, swiping my finger at my iPhone to create a similar effect. But I’m no Picasso, and I won’t be selling this scrap for a few thousand dollars. I wish!

This sketch is the one hundred and third in a 365-day challenge to draw a picture a day, every day, for a year…

Day one hundred and three: I made the decision not to pack my digital drawing pad for the trip to Grand Rapids, so it’s back to finger painting on the iPhone with DoodleBuddy for a few days. Tonight after dinner, over a big dish of chocolate cobbler at San Chez Tapas Bistro, I sketched my glass of San Pellegrino.

This sketch is the one hundred and second in a 365-day challenge to draw a picture a day, every day, for a year…

Day one hundred and two: Tomorrow I’m flying to Grand Rapids, Michigan, to participate in the Midwest Art History Society’s annual conference. Not a lot of time to draw, and with packing a suitcase on my mind, that’s what made the sketch today. Sometimes it’s good to just take the pen to the pad and go for it. This was made from my imagination before I even started packing. So much fun.

This sketch is the one hundred and first in a 365-day challenge to draw a picture a day, every day, for a year…

Day one hundred and one: Yep, you guessed it: geometry in my math for the GRE class this evening. I thought this diagram in the text book could have used some color and a little messing up around the edges. Calculate the area of that!

light at the end of the playhouse

This sketch is the one hundredth(!) in a 365-day challenge to draw a picture a day, every day, for a year…

Day one hundred: This sketch in oil was inspired by a photo that a friend of mine posted on Facebook. I liked the light in the pic a lot and wanted to play with that effect.
